New York — Former Syracuse women's ice hockey forward and alternate captain Brooke Avery (Concord, N.H.) has signed a professional contract with the National Women's Hockey League's (NWHL) Metropolitan Riveters, the Riveters announced on Tuesday. Avery becomes the fourth Orange player to sign with the league, joining Jacquie Greco ('13, Buffalo Beauts), Jessica Sibley ('17, Buffalo Beauts), and Heather Schwarz ('17, Boston Pride).
An offensive standout in her three years at Syracuse following her transfer from the University of New Hampshire, Avery recorded 28 goals in 148 games for the Orange. Her 14 goals in the 2017-18 season paced the team, her five game-winning goals that same year are tied for second in single-season program history, and the eight game-winning goals she netted in her career are tied for third in program history. Avery garnered College Hockey American All-Tournament Team honors in 2018 after opening the tournament with a hat trick against RIT that helped 'Cuse win 5-1 and advance to the second round. Avery topped off her career by helping the Orange win their first CHA conference-title in 2019 when Syracuse defeated Robert Morris 6-2; Avery contributed a goal and an assist in the championship game.
Academically, Avery is a three time CHA All-Academic team honoree and appeared on the Athletic Director's honor roll three times during her career.
"Coming off a memorable season at Syracuse, I'm eager to play at the next level and be a part of another championship team," Avery said. "I'm excited to continue my playing career and start a new chapter with the Riveters. I will continue to develop areas where I need to improve while excelling in other aspects of my game. I'm grateful for the opportunity the NWHL and Riveters have offered, and honored to be a role model for the future of the sport."
