Burlington, Vt. – Charlotte de Vries scored both the equalizer and game-winning goal Friday afternoon to lift the Syracuse field hockey team to their first win of the season. Syracuse wins its 13th-straight season opener and improves to 11-3 all-time against the Catamounts.
"I am so proud of this young team," head coach Ange Bradley said. "They stayed within themselves and grew throughout the game. They fought and had the grit and toughness to find a way. That is Syracuse hockey."
Carolin Hoffmann put the Orange ahead early scoring unassisted in the second minute of action. Sydney Melfi and Kate Hall responded with back-to-back goals for the Catamounts to lead 2-1 in the seventh minute. Sophomore SJ Quigley found the back of the goal in the ninth minute to even the score 2-2. The equalizer, assisted by Laura Graziosi, was Quigley's first career goal. Vermont took the lead once more when Melfi netted her second goal of the game unassisted in the 22nd minute.
The Catamounts held a 6-5 advantage in first half shots while the Orange had three penalty corner opportunities to UVM's one.
In the 54th minute de Vries scored her first career goal to even the game 3-3 with six minutes to play in regulation. As the clock winded down Vermont fired off a shot that missed just wide sending the first game of the season for both teams into overtime.
The Catamounts held a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners in the extra frame, including three-straight chances, but the Orange defense held strong.
Six minutes into overtime, de Vries did it again. The freshman scored unassisted to give the Orange their first win of the season and back-to-back season-opening victories over Vermont.
Goalkeeper Sarah Sinck made five saves in her career debut splitting time in goal with Syd Taylor. Taylor made a pair of saves and allowed one goal in 15 minutes of action. Two Orange, Quigley and de Vries, scored their first career goals. Vermont and 'Cuse were even in shots taking 18 apiece while Vermont had a 9-8 advantage in corners.
The Orange remain on the road to face UMass Lowell at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1. Syracuse opens the home season the following day against Lafayette at 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra. Admission and parking are free for all Syracuse home games and can be watched live online or via the WatchESPN App.
