WASHINGTON, D.C. – The RV Syracuse men's soccer team opened the 2019 campaign with a 3-1 setback at No. 13 Georgetown. Sophomore Ryan Raposo scored Syracuse's goal on a penalty kick in the second half.
Â
"We came up against a good Georgetown team and we learned a lot about ourselves," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "We can take positives from this game, which will prepare us for the ACC. If we continue to improve we'll enjoy a good season."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After neither team scored in the first half, Georgetown took the lead in the 48th minute when Derek Dodson scored on an assist Paul Rothrock. The Orange evened the score when Raposo found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 50th minute.
Â
The Hoyas took the lead for good when JB Fischer scored on a header in the 74th minute. Georgetown added an insurance tally 1:15 later on a goal by Dante Polara.
Â
"We had some good chances when the score was tied 1-1," McIntyre said. "That second goal was pivotal and unfortunately it went against us. Then when we were chasing the game they scored the third goal."
Â
OF NOTE
Raposo picked up right where he left off last season. He ranked second on the team in points and led the team in assists in his rookie campaign. Raposo earned a spot on the ACC All-Freshman Team.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper Christian Miesch, who transferred from Stony Brook, made three saves in his Orange debut.
Â
