Raposo's Career Night Leads Orange Past Bearcats

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Ryan Raposo recorded the first multiple-goal game of his career to lead the Syracuse men's soccer team to a 3-1 win against Binghamton. The match was the home opener for the Orange.
"Binghamton is a good team that is well-coached," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "They play a certain style of play that makes life very uncomfortable for teams. These games – where the ball is going front to back very direct with long throw ins – we had to roll our sleeves up tonight. We knew that going in. We knew we had to embrace that physical challenge."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Binghamton (1-1) started the scoring in the 18th minute when Parker McKnight fought off a Syracuse defender and put his shot in the upper right corner of the goal. The Orange answered in the 23rd minute. The play started in Binghamton's offensive end on a corner kick. The ball was played out to Raposo, who brought the ball into Syracuse's attacking zone and crossed the ball to senior Massimo Ferrin on the left side of the box. Ferrin buried his shot for his first goal of the year.
Raposo gave Syracuse the lead for good in the 61st minute when he took possession after the ball bounced off two Bearcat defenders and put his shot in the back of the net. He added an insurance goal in the 80th minute when he scored his third goal of the year on assists from Ferrin and junior Simon Triantafillou.
OF NOTE
Raposo scored two goals in a game for the first time in his career and finished with a career-high five points. He leads the team in points (7) and goals (3) this season.
"I thought (Ryan) was very good," McIntyre said. "He's an important part of our attack. He's dynamic. He's been a little nicked up this week, and got through some things. I thought he was terrific."
Redshirt junior Jake Leahy made his first career start in goal for the Orange. He made two saves on his way to his first career victory.
UP NEXT
The Orange continue their five-game homestand on Friday, Sept. 6 when they host Yale at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission and parking are free. The game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra, but fans can only watch the stream if their cable provider carries the ACC Network. Fans unsure if their provider carries ACCN are strongly encouraged to visit GetACCN.com.
