Tokyo – Arnaud Buard and the French Junior Men's Coxed Four (JM4+) placed second in their heat earning a spot in the A-Final at the World Rowing Junior Championships on Wednesday evening.
Buard, who strokes the French crew, finished in 6:19.390 less than half a second behind Germany and nearly five seconds faster than Canada.
"This is a great experience for Arnaud," Syracuse head coach Dave Reischman said. "For the past year he has been training at a very high level and now it is paying off in an opportunity to represent his home country at the Junior World Championships. It speaks to the level of athlete we are recruiting to Syracuse. Last year we had three incoming recruits and a current member of the squad represent their home countries at the U23 or Junior World Championships and this year we have two incoming recruits and one of our graduating seniors doing the same. That is the standard to compete in collegiate rowing. You have to have athletes with the ability to compete at a world championship level."
Buard and his teammates will race in the A-Final on Sunday at 10 a.m. in Tokyo (Saturday, 9 p.m. ET).
The 53rd World Rowing Junior Championships are taking place from Aug 7-11 in the Sea Forest Waterway in Tokyo Bay, a newly constructed venue for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The World Rowing Junior Championships are open to all member federations and rowers may compete in a junior rowing event until December 31 of the year in which they reach the age of 18.
