SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse recorded a point in the ACC standings with a 0-0 tie against No. 20 Louisville at the SU Soccer Stadium in the conference opener for both teams. It marked the Orange's third consecutive double overtime match in a span of eight days.
Â
"I said to the guys afterward my initial emotion is one of tremendous pride," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "For a new group, the takeaway at halftime was we're pretty good and we can play at this level. So that's a positive. We lacked a little bit of quality in the second half. It took the last 20 minutes of the game for us to kind of grab it by the scruff of the neck. I thought we did enough tonight to win this game."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse (1-1-3) was the more dangerous team in the first half, recording six shots to three for the Cardinals (2-1-2). The Orange's best chance came in the 28th minute when sophomore Ryan Raposo flicked a shot on goal, but it hit the crossbar to keep the game tied at 0-0. Freshman Luther Archimede also produced a couple of scoring opportunities, one coming on a counter attack off a Louisville corner, but his shot went just wide of the net.
Â
The Orange continued to apply pressure in the second half, recording eight shots. UofL goalkeeper Jake Gelnovatch was there to stop all five shots that were on frame as he recorded his third shutout of the season.
Â
Archimede was assessed his second yellow card of the match on the final play of regulation, forcing Syracuse to play a man down during the extra sessions. That didn't stop the Orange from successfully defending against four corner kicks during overtime, and goalkeeper Christian Miesch stopped the only shot for either team in OT for the 0-0 final.
Â
OF NOTE
Miesch finished with four saves to record Syracuse's first shutout of the season and his first as a member of the Orange.
Â
Syracuse recorded its second tie against a ranked opponent in as many games. The Orange tied then No. 22 New Hampshire on Sunday, 2-2
Â
UP NEXT
Syracuse concludes a string of five consecutive home games when it hosts Cornell on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission and parking are free. The game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
