SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse and Yale played to a 1-1 tie in men's soccer action at the SU Soccer Stadium on Friday, Sept. 6. The Orange led at halftime, but the Bulldogs answered in the second half.
Â
"Yale started the game better than us and ultimately they did what they needed to do," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "They made the game choppy in the second half. And we lacked a little quality in the final third tonight."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Yale (0-0-1) controlled possession for the first 15 minutes of play but Syracuse (1-1-1) took the lead in the 35th minute. Sophomore Hilli Goldhar served the ball into the box from the left side. The ball deflected off Yale goalkeeper Elian Haddock to junior Simon Triantafillou, who put his shot in the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
Â
The Bulldogs scored the equalizer in the 55th minute. Mark Winhoffer played the ball to the far post to Andrew Sady-Kennedy. Sady-Kennedy got around Orange goalkeeper Christian Miesch, who came out of goal to play the ball, and connected with Miguel Yuste in front of the goal. Yuste buried his shot for what turned out to be the final goal of the game.
Â
The Orange were the more dangerous team in both overtime sessions. Senior Matt Orr put his free kick on goal in the first OT, but Haddock made a leaping save. Syracuse appeared to have scored the game-winning goal with just more than a minute remaining in the second overtime, but the Orange were ruled offsides.
Â
OF NOTE
Syracuse dominated the game statistically. The Orange outshot Yale, 16-6, and earned 12 corner kicks to just one for the Bulldogs. Miesch finished with two saves, while Haddock had five.
Â
UP NEXT
The Orange will play their second ranked opponent of the season when they host No. 22 New Hampshire on Sunday, Sept. 8 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The game will be televised on the ACC Network. Admission and parking are free.
