
#19 Orange Lose to #5 Virginia in ACC Opener

Syracuse, N.Y. – In the first field hockey game on the new ACC Network, #19 Syracuse lost to #5 Virginia after a pair of second-half goals by the Cavaliers. 'Cuse moves to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, while UVA improves to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC.
The two teams played to a stalemate in the first half. The Orange outshot the Cavaliers 5-3 in the first half and goalkeeper Sarah Sinck made two of her four saves in the first two frames. Each team was even on penalty corners with three a piece.
Syracuse came out aggressive in the third quarter with four shots, but it was the Cavs that broke the tie late in the stanza. Cato Geusgens scored on a corner in the 44th minute. Anzel Viljoen and Greer Gill were both credited with the assist after the play was reviewed by officials. UVA took its 1-0 advantage into the final frame.
Virginia added to its lead less than a minute into the fourth quarter. A shot by Viljoen was tipped-in by a defender's stick after Sinck's initial save. The Orange were held to one shot in the final frame and zero penalty corners.
Charlotte de Vries led all players with shots and 'Cuse had a 6-1 advantage in man-up opportunities. Viljoen recorded a game-high three points for the Cavaliers, while Lauren Hausheer made four saves in her sixth win in goal this season.
The Orange begin a four-game road stretch on Sunday, Sept. 22 when Syracuse faces Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. at 1 p.m. Syracuse will next play at J.S. Coyne Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 12 against #1 North Carolina.
