SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore goalkeeper Christian Miesch recorded a season-high eight saves, and sophomore Hilli Goldhar scored his first goal of the season to lead Syracuse in a 1-1 draw against Pittsburgh at the SU Soccer Stadium. It marked the Orange's fifth overtime match in its last seven contests.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse (3-2-4, 0-1-2) took an early lead in the 18th minute. Senior Massimo Ferrin worked around his defender on the right side and passed the ball to Goldhar in the box. Goldhar headed the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of 2019.
Â
Pittsburgh (3-3-2, 1-1-1) answered in the 36th minute. Edward Kizza set up the play as got by his defender and pushed the ball to Veljko Petkovic, who put his shot in the left corner.
Â
The Panthers were more aggressive after intermission with nine shots, but Miesch was up to the challenge. He made six saves in the second half, including a leaping save on Sito Sena's free kick in the 85th minute to keep the game tied.
Â
A second yellow card to Luther Archimede in the 51st minute forced the Orange to play a man down, but neither team could take advantage of its scoring chances, sending the game to overtime.
Â
Petkovic was issued his second yellow card in the 95th minute as the teams played 10 v. 10 for the remainder of overtime. Syracuse continued to produce scoring chances, but Panthers' goalkeeper Arie Ammann made three of his nine saves in the second overtime session as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Â
"I thought we were absolute fantastic warriors to hang in there," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "The red card changed the game. I thought we were playing (well) and I liked the match ups, but obviously that changed the game."
Â
OF NOTE
Miesch finished just one save shy of his career high of nine he set last season at Stony Brook. Miesch has started the last five matches for Syracuse and has a 1.03 goals-against average and a .765 save percentage this season.
Â
Goldhar scored his first goal of the year for Syracuse, increasing his season point total to four. In 2018, he had two goals and five assists.
Â
The Orange have now played in five overtime games this season. They are 1-0-4 in those, all of which have come on their home pitch.
