Zaferes Claims World Title

Syracuse alum Katie Zaferes has reached the top of her sport. The Olympic triathlete claimed her first world championship this week.
Zaferes won the Grand Final in Lausanne, Switzerland, out-running Jessica Learmonth to close the 10k run. Zaferes only needed to finish in the top-12 to claim the title after her accumulated points throughout the World Triathlon Series this summer, but did so in dominant fashion, winning the final event.
At 'Cuse, Zaferes (formerly Katie Hursey), was a USTFCCCA Honorable Mention All-American in the 3000-meter steeplechase. She held the Orange record in the event until last season, when All-American Paige Stoner broke the record in 2018.
The current squad will take on the Harry Lang Invitational on Saturday to open the season.
