SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse jumped out a 2-0 lead in the first half, but conceded two second-half goals in a 2-2 tie against No. 22 New Hampshire on Friday, Sept. 8. It was the Orange's second double-overtime game in a span of three days.
Â
"When you're up 2-0 at home, you hope you can manage the game," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "But credit to New Hampshire. The disappointing thing was that I think we were very good in the first half and, if we score a third goal, the game is over. We didn't and we stopped playing in the second half. We were physically beat up and didn't have enough quality on the ball tonight."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse (1-1-2) took an early lead when junior Simon Triantafillou scored on assists from sophomores Ryan Raposo and Hilli Goldhar. Raposo extended the lead in the 29th minute. He took a shot from 45 yards out on the left side, which bounced in front of the goal and then past New Hampshire goalkeeper Alejandro Robles for his team-leading fourth goal of the year.
Â
New Hampshire (2-0-2) did all of its scoring after intermission. The first scoring play started with a defensive save by a Syracuse defender on a shot by Rory O'Driscoll. The ball deflected off the defender to Bilal Kamal, who put his shot in the back of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1. The score stayed that way until the 86th minute when Donnett Sackie scored on assists from Fabian Lutz and Kamal to even the score.
Â
Neither team could get a shot on goal during either of the two 10-minute extra sessions. The Wildcats had a corner in each overtime but couldn't convert as the game ended a 2-2 tie.
Â
OF NOTE
Triantafillou has now scored a goal in two consecutive games. He recorded his first career goal on Friday night against Yale. Triantafillou ranks second on the team in points (5) and goals (2).
Â
Raposo has scored a goal in three of the four matches this season. He has four goals, which equal his total from a year ago when he played in 18 matches as a freshman. Raposo leads the team with 10 points.
