SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse ice hockey used a trio of goals to secure a 3-1 victory over College Hockey America foe Penn State Saturday afternoon at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The victory featured goals from Victoria Klimek, Kelli Rowswell, and Savannah Rennie. For their part, the Nittany Lions lit the lamp once. Syracuse improves to 7-4-1 in the CHA with the win, while Penn State drops to 5-4-3 in conference play.
"Tonight we made the plays to protect our lead," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "Even though they were down in our end a a lot, the kids managed the puck and we got it out. The difference for us was having the composure to make those little plays when the pressure was on." Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn State came out strong in the first period, quickly taking control of the puck and forcing Orange goalie Allison Small to fend off two breakaway opportunities and make a diving save just five minutes in. She stood on her head throughout the first period to exit the opening stanza with 14 saves.
Penn State's Mikayla Lantto opened up scoring midway through the second period with a breakaway up the left side, but the Orange turned up the intensity and answered three minutes later with back-to-back goals from Klimek and Rowswell down low to take the 2-1 advantage.Â
The third period looked as if it would favor Penn State, as they came out strong and peppered Small with pucks. The early moments of the third included a wide open breakaway chance fom PSU's Lantto, but the threat was broken up by a blitzing Allie Olnowich just ast Lantto reached the blue line. The Nittany Lions had a chance to equalize halfway through when Anna Promersberger had nothing but a wide open net in front of her, but she wiffed on the first chance and was shut down by Small on the second. Syracuse scored its final goal of the day with 15 seconds left on a two-on-two breakaway between Rennie and Abby Moloughney.Â
Nittany Lions goaltender Chantal Burke (10-6-5) recorded the loss, totaling 21 saves on the afternoon. Small earned the win, making a career-best 39 saves.
