WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Two timely runs and some smart defense was all Wake Forest needed to edge out the Orange, 65-60, Sunday afternoon in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Demon Deacons outshot the Orange by just 0.2 in the field and 7.3 from the charity stripe en route to their victory. This is just the second time in eight meetings, and first at home, that Wake Forest (12-8, 5-4 ACC) has come out on top of Syracuse (9-10, 3-5 ACC).
"Wake did a really good job and we have to give them a lot of credit," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "We have to continue to be aggressive at the rim, attack the backboard, try to score through contact and make open shots. This is a very physical basketball league and we have to be able to finish tough plays."Â

Up Next in the Dome:
The Orange return to the Carrier Dome Jan. 30 to host Virginia Tech at 8 p.m. (ACC Network) for Professional Women of Syracuse Night. Tickets for the game start at $10 for adults and $5 for youth under 12.

Of note:
- Freshman Teisha Hyman broke the 100-point mark of her career. She entered the day with 95 points and finished with six.
- Kiara Lewis recorded her 17th-consecutive double digit game, scoring 17 points in 40 minutes. Lewis also sank seven free throws.
- Emily Engstler recorded 14 points and seven rebounds to finish three boards shy of her eighth double-double of the year.
- Wake Forest had three players record score in the double digits, with Alex Sharp leading the way with 16.
How it happened:
- 'Cuse and Wake went point-for-point through the first five minutes before WFU used a 10-4 run to go up 16-9 with two minutes to go in the first. Syracuse countered with a 13-8 push of its own to tie things at 24 midway through the second. The Orange then hit six more points to carry a 30-28 lead into the locker room.
- Kiara Lewis paced both sides with 11 points in 20 minutes. The redshirt junior went 6-for-8 from the charity stripe in the first half. Emily Engstler was a board monster in the first, grabbing a game-high six rebounds.
- The point battle continued through the third with neither side pulling away by more than three points at a time until the Demon Deacons used an 8-0 run at the start of the fourth to go up 53-44. Wake Forest kept the pressure on Syracuse and didn't allowed a point in the fourth quarter until the 5:20 mark when Emily Engstler sank a trey, a layup, and a free throw to make the score 53-50.
- The moment of brilliance from Engstler didn't slow WFU though. The Demon Deacons outscored the Orange 12-10 in the final five minutes to earn the win.
