Orange Win 14th Consecutive Season Opener

Graduate student Tiana Mangakahia returned to the court for the first time since her cancer diagnosis to lead the Orange to a 50-39 victory at Stony Brook on Sunday. The point guard led all scorers with 16 points and had seven rebounds, four steals, three assists and a block. Mangakahia and senior Kiara Lewis accounted for 24 of Syracuse's 50 points in a game that Syracuse led for all 40 minutes. Lewis added seven rebounds to her eight points. It is the 14th consecutive season-opening victory for the Orange.
"I'm just happy we came on the court and won the game," said Orange head coach Quentin Hillsman. "We knew it would not be easy to go on the road and play a well-coached team like Stony Brook. We took the challenge to come here and play."
The Orange opened up a 10-2 lead five minutes into the game and held a 13-7 lead after the first quarter. Mangakahia scored seven points and freshman Kamilla Cardoso added four.
The Orange led 26-10 at the half, and 35-28 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the No.5 recruit in the country, Kamilla Cardoso, showed off her ability to not only deny defensively and rip down boards, but to run the floor and create offensive opportunities at the basket.
Cardoso tallied seven points in the final five minutes to help seal the victory. She finished the game with 14 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots in 13 minutes.
Syracuse's 50 points marks the fewest points in a victory since a 45-42 Orange win against Villanova in 2005. The defensive effort to hold Stony Brook to 39 points is the best outing since a win against Colgate in 2017.
The Orange will host Lincoln in the 2020-21 home opener on Wednesday, December 2 (6 p.m., ACC Network).
