Orange Top Colonials, Celebrate Senior Day
2/29/2020 7:08:00 PM | Ice Hockey
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange did their seniors well Saturday afternoon, winning, 4-2, over Robert Morris (19-10-4, 13-4-2 CHA) in the final game of the regular season. Abby Moloughney found herself in the scoring column twice, while Madison Beishuizen and Lauren Bellefontaine also made their marks. Goaltender Allison Small recorded 30 saves. The win sets 'Cuse (12-19-2, 10-7-2 CHA) up for a Thursday afternoon showdown against Lindenwood (5-23-4, 3-15-1 CHA) in game one of the College Hockey America (CHA) Tournament.
"This win's huge for a variety of reasons," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "We got to send our seniors off in their last game here, and we get to send our team off to the playoffs with a win. Now we have to take this momentum and pack it up for the bus on Wednesday. I'm really happy for our seniors, the parents who were here, and for our team collectively. They can feel good about finishing this season at home with a really great win, and that's what you want."
How it happened:
After falling to The Colonials in last night's match up, Syracuse had much to prove. In the first period, Lexi Templeman snuck one between the goalpost and Small's back on a cheeky bounce off her leg to put RMU up 1-0seven minutes into the game. Despite fourteen shots on target, the Orange could not get anything by goalkeeper Raygan Kirk.
Syracuse responded twice in the second period with goals from Beishuizen and Moloughney. Beishuizen capitalized on a end-to-end pass from Shelby Calof that set her up for a brilliant finish to Kirk's left. Moloughney sounded the horn with less than a minute left, her shot coming from the bottom of the left circle and beating Kirk low.
The Colonials had just one answer in the third, their goal coming from Anjelica Diffendal six minutes in, but 'Cuse did them one better. Moloughney put the Orange's third goal away midway through the period off a slap shot from between the circles. Bellefontaine put the final nail in the coffin with 37 seconds left on an empty netter.
On to Buffalo
The CHA tournament starts Thursday afternoon in Buffalo, N.Y. The Orange enter as the No. 3 seed and will open the tournament at 3 p.m. against No. 6 seeded Lindenwood. Full information about the 2020 CHA Tournament can be found here.
Syracuse is the defending champion, having taken down Lindenwood (4-1), Mercyhurst (4-3) and Robert Morris (6-2) in last year's tournament to win the first CHA title in program history. The Orange hold a 12-10 record in the CHA Tournament.
