CHA Tournament Info | Syracuse Notes
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - After 34 games the regular season has come to a close and it's time for the playoffs. The College Hockey America (CHA) tournament kicks off Thursday at 3 p.m. when defending CHA Tournament Champion and three-seed Syracuse takes on six-seed Lindenwood in the LECOM Harborcenter in Buffalo, N.Y. Fans can watch the action via the CHA Digital Network. Full information about the tournament can be found here. A win Thursday would see Syracuse take on two-seed Robert Morris Friday at 4 p.m.
"We understand the task at hand—win three games in three days," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "I think the kids are feeling pretty good, and for the most part we're healthy. We're all excited to get on the bus and head to Buffalo to defend our title."
Syracuse leads the all-time series against the Lions 30-5-2 and went 4-0 this year, outscoring them 31-3. Lindenwood is the lone CHA program to have never won a tournament title, and the Lions have never reached the championship game. Despite their history, Flanagan isn't looking past game one, especially since all three of Lindenwood's goalies were injured during the first series of the season.
"We have to be careful to not be overconfident, because their goaltending situation kinda played into our hands the first time," Flanagan said. "When they came here, I thought they played really well in the Friday night game, and I'm sure that's what they're thinking about. They probably erased the Saturday game where we played well and won 8-0, but that's something we have to be careful of and not get too far ahead of ourselves psychologically. We expect them to be well prepared."
Start the Title Defense
The Orange took down Lindenwood (4-1), Mercyhurst (4-3) and Robert Morris (6-2) in last year's tournament to win the first CHA title in program history. Since 2003, Syracuse has been in the CHA final seven times, coming out the runner up six times before winning it all last year.
The Orange hold a 12-10 record in the CHA Tournament, scoring 64 goals while allowing 46. Syracuse's most frequent postseason foe is Mercyhurst, the Lakers the one-seed this time around. The two programs have met eight times in the tournament and the Lakers lead the postseason series 7-1.
Syracuse outscored the competition 14-6 in last year's tournament, three of those goals coming on the power play. All-Tournament selection Anonda Hoppner paced the team with a program-best five points (2-3-5), while Lindsay Eastwood, Abby Moloughney and Lauren Bellefontaine all recorded four. Goalie Ady Cohen played the final two games for Syracuse and recorded a .915 SV% and 2.50 GAA. Eastwood had Syracuse's first CHA Tournament hat trick, scoring thrice in game two against Mercyhurst. Allie Munroe, Bellefontaine, Moloughney and Hoppner all recorded a point in each game.
Turning Heads
Syracuse turned heads all season, and the team's efforts have culminated in four Orange being named finalists for six 2019-20 CHA Regular Season Major Awards. Abby Moloughney leads the Orange finalists, having earned a spot on the Player of the Year, Best Defensive Forward, and the Individual Sportsmanship Award lists. Eastwood is a finalist for Best Defender, while Mae Batherson is in contention for Rookie of the Year. Coach Flanagan is a finalist for Coach of the Year.
Record Watch
- Syracuse has scored exactly 99 goals this season which ties the program record from 2013-14. 'Cuse reached the mark in 117 less shots than before.
- At 2.9 goals/game, this is arguably the most productive season in program history. The Orange's collective 260 points are four shy of tying the team record, but Syracuse's 7.64 points/game is a program best.
- Allison Small and Ady Cohen have combined for 27.5 saves/game, the second most in program history.
- Eastwood (Career: 21-52-73) became the program's leading scoring defenseman with her goal against Mercyhurst on Jan. 11. Her 73 points are three away from tying the record for most points by a defender (Nicole Renault '16).
- Jessica DiGirolamo (eight) and Eastwood (six) are a few goals away from tying the Syracuse record for most goals in a season for a defender (2010, Jacquie Greco). DiGiroalmo's 17 career goals put her at third-most in an Orange defenseman's career.
- Eastwood's 20 assists this season put her five away from the season record of 25 and moves her to seventh on Syracuse's all-time assists leader board.
Scouting the Lions
- Lindenwood had just three conference-wins this year and are at the bottom of the CHA table.
- The Lions have won just one of their previous twelve contests.
- Sierra Burt (6-11-17) leads the Lions despite missing three games this season.
- Goaltender Annika Asplundh has allowed 64 goals in her 26 game played so far this season. With 758 saves, she holds a .922 save percentage and a 4-17-5 record on the year.
- The Lions have one of the least-productive squads in the country. Their 1.27 goals/game average ranks 38th out of 41 teams, and they allow 3.50 goals per game.
