SAN FRANCISCO – Former Syracuse safety Evan Foster has signed a three-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers, the team announced yesterday. The terms of Foster's contract were not disclosed.
Â
Foster was one of four players to join San Francisco's 80-man roster for training camp on Thursday. The 49ers also added wide receiver Jaron Brown, safety Johnathan Cyprien and offensive lineman Hroniss Grasu.
Â
An undrafted free agent, Foster was three-year starter for the Orange at strong safety. In 46 career games (37 starts) from 2016-19, Foster logged 234 tackles, the ninth-most in team history for a defensive back. He led the Syracuse secondary in tackles three years running (2017-19) and made a career-high 86 stops as a junior in 2018. Foster also chipped in 14 passes defended (two interceptions, 12 pass breakups), nine tackles for loss, three sacks, one caused fumble and three fumble recoveries during his Orange tenure.
Â
The 49ers opened training camp in early August. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NFL will not stage any preseason games in 2020. San Francisco is scheduled to kick off the regular season on Sunday, Sept. 13 against the Arizona Cardinals.
