Freshman Hannah Johnson scored the first goal of her Orange career in a 2-1 loss to Robert Morris on Friday at Tennity Ice Pavilion. In the third period, Johnson tied the game at one, scoring on a shot from the blue line that she fired through a crowd of RMU defenders with 43 seconds left on a Syracuse power play. Freshmen Sarah Thompson and freshman Tatum White assisted on Johnson's goal less than four minutes into the third period. Syracuse (2-5-1 overall, 2-3-1 College Hockey America) will host Robert Morris (6-2-1) for the second game in the series on Saturday at 3 pm. The game will be streamed live on Cuse.com.
Â
"Our freshmen are all getting good opportunity to play. Any time you have freshmen who contribute that is going to help your team," said associate head coach Brendon Knight. "As we go along, they are going to continue to get better which will make our team better. We are very pleased with our freshman class."
Â
After neither team scored in the first period, Robert Morris scored the first goal of the game 7:46 into the second frame when Anjelica Diffendal got a shot past Syracuse goalie Allison Small on a one-on-one breakaway. After Johnson's goal evened the score, Robert Morris tallied the game-winner with just more than nine minutes left in the game on a goal by Maggy Burbridge.
Â
Small recorded 32 saves, boosting her career total to 861 in 32 games. Thompson increased her assist total to four. She has six points on the season, which is third on the team. White has three assists and four points in her rookie campaign.
