LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- No. 9 Syracuse's comeback attempt at No. 5 Louisville came up just short in a 2-1 setback on Friday, Oct. 29. The Orange are 11-4 overall and conclude ACC play with a 4-2 league record. Syracuse will be the No. 2 seed in next week's ACC Tournament, which is scheduled for Nov. 4-7 at J.S. Coyne Stadium at the Lampe Athletics Complex.
Louisville, which claimed the the outright ACC regular-season title with the victory, took the early lead when Filippa Niebuhr scored an unassisted goal at the 9:05 mark in the first quarter. That Cardinals (15-2, 5-0) added to their lead in the third quarter. Erica Cooper deflected a penalty corner shot by Julie Kouijzer into the goal to push the advantage to 2-0.
Hailey Bitters cut the deficit in half in the third quarter when she scored off a rebound off a defender's stick. That was as close as Syracuse could get. Orange goalkeeper Mila de Kuijer made three saves in the fourth quarter, but Syracuse couldn't score the equalizer.
Louisville outshot Syracuse, 15-11, and had six penalty corners to five for the Orange. de Kuijer finished with seven saves.
The Orange return home to close out the regular season with a non-conference game against Cornell. The two teams met Sept. 22 in Ithaca, N.Y. where Syracuse earned a 1-0 victory. Prior to the start of Sunday's 2 p.m. game against the Big Red, the Orange will recognize their graduating seniors who will play their final regular-season home game at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The non-conference game against Cornell will be streamed live on ACCNX through the ESPN app. Â
