ALBANY, N.Y. – Freshman Jeorgio Kocevski scored in the 86th minute to give the Syracuse men's soccer team a 2-1 victory against Hofstra at the Afrim's Sports Complex in Albany, N.Y. on Friday, Feb. 12. The match was the first game on Syracuse's spring schedule.
Â
"It was wonderful to be back out on the pitch and competing together," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "A big thank you to our wonderful Syracuse support staff who pulled this off today. This was a tough game. Hofstra has a very effective way of playing. They commit to it and they are very good at it. We showed a lot of character to find a way to win this game. We were unable to score the second goal and Hofstra did a good job of hanging around. But it was terrific to see Jeorgio score the late winner after some excellent build up play. We have a lot to improve on but this is a good start. And big picture it was just marvelous to be competing today and representing Syracuse University."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute when sophomore Abdi Salim scored off a free kick by sophomore Noah Singelmann. Â The score stayed that way until the 75th minute when Hofstra found the back of the net off a restart. Ryan Carmichael recorded the goal off an assist from Storm Strongin.
Â
The Orange took the lead for good in the 86th minute when Kocevski scored on another assist from Singelmann. The Pride continued to send numbers forward in search of the equalizer, but two offsides calls in the final three minutes help prevent its comeback attempt.
Â
OF NOTE
