Vestri Wins an ACC Championship!
2/26/2021 8:16:00 PM | Track and Field
Amanda Vestri made her move two-thirds of the way through her race never looked back in Friday's ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship. She distanced herself from the rest of the field over the final laps of the race to claim the ACC Championship in the women's 5000-meter run.
Vestri is the latest 'Cuse star to dominate the 5000-meters. Since the Orange joined the ACC, Syracuse has won at least one of the 5ks (men's or women's indoor or outdoor) in six of the seven years which both ACC Championships were held (excludes 2020). She is the second women's winner, joining Paige Stoner, who won both the indoor and outdoor events in 2019.
She crossed the line in 16:10.33, winning her heat by over seven seconds and the event by six. Abigail Spiers (16:44.68) took 14th for the Orange in the event as well, while Ellie Lawler (17:18.1) took 26th.
Vestri wasn't the only one to setup a scoring chance for the team on Friday night. Syracuse had three men reach the finals in the 60-meter hurdles and another advance in the men's mile.
Brevin Sims (7.98), Isaiah Lewis (8.06) and Jamil Adams (8.06) are all headed to Saturday's hurdles final. Naseem Smith (8.17) narrowly missed out, taking 11th overall, while Anthony Vazquez (8.29) took 14th. Lewis and Adams turned in personal-best times in the race.
Shaleah Colaire was 0.01 seconds away from reaching the final in the women's race. She ran to a time of 8.43 seconds, which was ninth overall and 0.01 away from the eighth and final qualifying spot. Ashley Wallace (8.87) also ran in the event.
Gavin Richards will also be heading to Saturday's final. He finished the men's mile in 4:05.28, which was the seventh-best qualifying time in the meet and a personal best.
Eunice Boateng (7.77) raced in the women's 60-meter dash and Emma Eastman (4.59.35) raced in the mile for the Orange.
Action in the final day of the ACC Championships gets underway on Saturday at Noon.
