GREENSBORO, N.C. –  For the second consecutive year, ACC head coaches selected Orange attacker Emily Hawryschuk and defenders Sarah Cooper and Kerry Defliese for the Preseason All-ACC Team. In addition, the Orange were picked to finish third in the conference in a vote by head coaches.
Â
The Preseason All-ACC honors come after Inside Lacrosse named Hawryschuk, Cooper and Defliese to its Preseason All-America list on Feb. 1. The three Syracuse standouts also finished with All-ACC honors in 2019, with Hawryschuk named to the first team and Cooper and Defliese earning second-team honors
Â
Hawryschuk, a two-time first-team All-American and 2020 Tewaaraton Watch List nominee, ranks sixth in team history in career goals with 193 through her first four seasons with the Orange. The graduate student from Victor, N.Y. earned first-team All-ACC honors in 2018 and 2019 after leading Syracuse in goals and points in both seasons. In 2020, she finished second in the nation in goals (39) and goals per game (4.88) in eight contests.
Â
Cooper and Defliese anchored the NCAA's best scoring defense a season ago, allowing just 7.00 goals per game and assisting a unit with a top-10 clearing percentage (.912). Cooper, a junior from Lutherville, Md., led last year's squad in caused turnovers (12) while Garden City, N.Y., native Defliese finished tied for second (8). Both defenders earned All-ACC and Inside Lacrosse All-America Second Team selections last season.
Â
ACC head coached picked North Carolina to win the regular-season title for the second consecutive season. The Tar Heels earned 63 points, followed by Notre Dame with 54 points and Syracuse with 51 points. North Carolina, Notre Dame and Syracuse rank No. 1-3 in the national Inside Lacrosse Preseason rankings. Virginia (33 pts.) and Boston College (29 pts.) place fourth and fifth, and Duke (28 pts.), Virginia Tech (22 pts.), and Louisville (8 pts.) round out the 2021 ACC preseason poll.Â
Â
The third-ranked Orange open their 2021 season on Saturday, Feb. 20 on the road at No. 5 Loyola with opening draw at 12 p.m. The Orange will host their first home game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. versus Stony Brook in the Carrier Dome.
