
Orange Split Double Header with Charlotte

Syracuse split its double header with Charlotte on the first day of the Green & White Classic hosted by the 49ers. The Orange lost the first game, 3-2, before tying a season-high six runs in a 6-4 win over the 49ers in game two. 'Cuse and Charlotte play a rubber match at 10 a.m. Saturday before the Orange wrap up their weekend play with a 1 p.m. game against Campbell.Â
In game one, Gabby Teran homered to left field in the top of the first for an early 1-0 lead. Toni Martin reached on a throwing error and Neli Casares-Maher scored an unearned run on the play to make it 2-0 SU. An infield hit in the bottom of the third scored a run for the 49ers cutting Syracuse's lead to one run. In the bottom of the sixth Anna Devereaux doubled to left center to drive in two runs giving Charlotte a 3-2 advantage. The Orange were unable to get anything going in the top of the seventh ending the game in favor of the home team.Â
Teran had a pair of hits in the loss while Casares-Maher, Geana Torres and Paris Woods also collected hits. Alexa Romero pitched a complete game striking out seven 49ers in six innings of work. She is now 2-2 on the season.Â
In the later game, the Orange took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a Jude Padilla home run that scored Martin and Casares-Maher. Charlotte tied it up with a three-run home run by Kourtney Gremillion in the bottom of the third inning.Â
In the top of the sixth, Woods reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop which scored Martin from third for a 4-3 lead. Maxine Barnes hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth for a 5-3 lead and Rebecca Clyde made it 6-3 with a single to left field. Charlotte got one back in the bottom of the seventh with a home run by Bowman but it wasn't enough as Kaia Oliver secured the 6-4 win in the circle with a pop up and groundout to end the inning.
Oliver tossed a complete game with three strikeouts and one walk. She improves to 3-2 on the season. Padilla and Clyde both went 2-for-3 at the plate while six different members of the Orange lineup recorded a hit in the win.Â
Syracuse and Charlotte meet for the final time at the Green & White Classic at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 13. The Orange then close out the weekend with a game against Campbell at 1 p.m.
