SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Syracuse Men's rowing team will take the water for competition for the first time this year in a few short weeks. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and obstacles with traveling, the Orange will stack multiple races into three dates this season before heading to the IRA Championships Memorial Day Weekend. The Orange begin their 2021 slate against Navy and George Washington on April 18 in Fairfax, Va.
This is the first time the Orange will race since a solid performance at the Head of the Charles in 2019. The 2020 spring and fall seasons were canceled due to the pandemic.
"When we line up against Navy on April 18th it will have been 532 days since we last put on the Orange jersey and took a run down the racecourse," said head coach Dave Reischman. "Everyone on Planet Earth has made a lot of personal sacrifices to manage this pandemic. When we line it up that first time we will do so with a lot of gratitude and awareness of everything we have all been through in the past 12 months and how special it is to be able to do the sport we love."
The season kicks off on April 18th against Navy and George Washington in Fairfax, VA. The last time the Orange and the Naval Academy met, Syracuse won the Goes Trophy after beating the Midshipmen by one second in 2019.
"We are all really excited to finally be able to race again," senior co-captain Jakob Andersen said. "It has been a long time coming, so to finally have a clear goal to focus on feels great. Before the pandemic cut our season short last year it really felt like we were building towards something special. Since then, we have worked harder than ever to maintain our momentum and continue getting faster. That's why it feels great to know that we'll soon get to show everyone just what we're made of. Our goal for the IRA remains the same as always: enter the regatta faster than we have been before and demonstrate to all of our opponents that we refuse to be outworked.
Syracuse then heads to Boston, Mass., to take on Northeastern, Boston University, and Wisconsin on May 1 and 2. The last planned event is the IRA National Championships from May 28th-30th at Mercer Lake in New Jersey. This year's IRA Championship format has been restructured to a two-day event.
The Eastern Sprints Regatta, slated to happen on May 16th has been canceled; however, additional races may make their way onto the schedule as the season progresses.
