The Orange varsity eight is the Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week for its performance against Northeastern in winning the Orange Challenge Cup for the fourth consecutive year. The 18th-ranked Orange posted a time of 6:43.01, more than 20 seconds ahead of Northeastern (7:05.9) in the race in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The crew includes Hannah Murphy (coxswain), Meg Varcoe (stroke), Maddy Horridge, Lea Dahn, Lucy Pearce, Eleanor Alexopoulos, Kamile Kralikaite, Emma Braun and Christie Castorino (bow).
The oldest cup race in women's collegiate rowing, the Orange Challenge Cup started in 1979 and is awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race between Syracuse, Northeastern and Pennsylvania. Penn is not competing this season due to COVID-19. The three programs have competed annually for the Orange Challenge Cup from 1979 through 2019, with the exception of 1994. Syracuse's win is the eighth in a row against Northeastern, including winning the Orange Challenge Cup in 2017, 2018 and 2019 when the three teams competed for the cup within the Doc Hosea Invite.
Syracuse will compete in the Big Ten Invitational on April 17 and 18 at East Fork State Park in Bethel, Ohio. The Orange are slated to compete against Big Ten programs including Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Rutgers and Wisconsin, in addition to Alabama, Duke, Louisville, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington State.
