Orange Compete with Nation's Top Teams at Big Ten Invitational

The 20th-ranked Syracuse Orange took the water against top 20 competition at the Big Ten Invitational on Saturday, April 17 on Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio. In the morning the Orange varsity eight finished fourth against #4 Virginia, #3 Ohio State, #12 Indiana and then came back in the afternoon race to beat #9 Tennessee and #16 Iowa and finish second behind #6 Michigan. The Orange second varsity eight and first varsity four also beat #9 Tennessee and #16 Iowa and took second behind #6 Michigan in the afternoon races. The first varsity four finished second in the morning race, beating #3 Ohio State and #12 Indiana and finishing behind #4 Virginia.

"All of our boats in the morning races did some things well," said head coach Luke McGee. "The varsity eight and second varsity eight had elements that they did really well and then carried them to the afternoon. The team performance in the second set of racing was strong, particularly the first and second varsity eights and the first and second varsity fours beating ninth-ranked Tennessee and 16th-ranked Iowa. The racing today required a lot of composure because of the conditions."

Syracuse's second varsity four finished second in the morning race, beating Louisville and #16 Iowa and finishing behind #11 Rutgers. In the afternoon race the Orange took second, beating #9 Tennessee and #16 Iowa and behind the winner #6 Michigan.

The third varsity four beat Notre Dame and #16 Iowa and was second behind #6 Michigan in the morning session and finished second behind #6 Michigan and ahead of #16 Iowa in the afternoon race.

The invitational field features 12 of the nation's top 20 teams, including 20th-ranked Syracuse. In addition to the Orange, the field includes third-ranked Ohio State, sixth-ranked Michigan, 11th-ranked Rutgers, 12th-ranked Indiana, 15th-ranked Wisconsin, 16th-ranked Iowa, 17th-ranked Minnesota, and Michigan State from the Big Ten, in addition to 4th-ranked Virginia, 7th-ranked Alabama, 9th-ranked Tennessee, 18th-ranked Washington State, Louisville and Notre Dame.

"We are continuing to progress," McGee said. "You could see them building confidence in each other from the morning to the afternoon. They are building belief in one another that they can do it. Tomorrow we will look to continue the process of improvement and build upon today."

The Big Ten Invitational continues on Sunday with races beginning at 8:30 am. The first Syracuse race will feature the varsity eight at 9 am.
