
#9 FSU Takes Two from Syracuse

The Syracuse softball team (15-13 overall, 8-10 ACC) lost both games of Saturday's Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) doubleheader to No. 9 Florida State. The Seminoles (29-6 overall, 17-2 ACC) won game one, 7-3, and forced a run rule after six innings in a 9-0 game two victory to win both games of the twin bill. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday, April 18 beginning at 10 a.m. to wrap up the four-game ACC series. Game one of Sunday's doubleheader was originally scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m. but it was postponed due to rain.Â

In game one, Syracuse got on the board first when Neli Casares-Maher put the ball over the right center fence to give SU a 1-0 advantage in the first inning. Florida State took over in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs on three home runs, making it 4-1 FSU in the middle of the fourth. Three more solo shots from the Seminoles in the top of the sixth made it a 7-1 ballgame. The Orange didn't quit, trying to rally in the bottom of the seventh Toni Martin stole home on a wild pitch and Paris Woods blasted a home run to right field to cut the FSU lead to four with two outs. The Orange were unable to complete a seventh-inning rally, ultimately losing 7-3.Â

Alexa Romero (5-4) was given the loss in the circle. She pitched 5.2 innings, allowed six earned runs on six hits before Jolie Gustave came in during the sixth. Gustave threw the remaining 1.1 innings and gave up one home run.

Six Orange players recorded a hit in the loss.

Game two was controlled by Florida State from the very start. The Seminoles scored on a base hit in the top of the second and advanced a runner home off a bunt in the top of the fourth for a 2-0 advantage. Toni Martin launched a standup triple into right field in the bottom of the fourth, but was left on base to end the inning. FSU had three runs on two hits in the top of the fifth. A pair of RBI doubles gave the Florida State the 5-0 lead. The Seminoles tacked on four more runs off four hits in the top of the sixth to solidify the run rule and win 9-0 in six innings played.

Kaia Oliver (6-6) threw 5.2 innings in the loss. The sophomore gave up nine runs (six earned) and nine hits before Gustave came in to close out the sixth. She gave up one hit before a fly out to center ended the inning.

Casares-Maher and Martin recorded SU's only two hits in the loss.
There will be no spectators admitted into the Skytop Softball Stadium due to COVID-19 protocols.Â
