Orange Set to Race Rutgers on Sunday

The 2020-21 Orange women will make their racing debut on Sunday, April 4th against Rutgers on Mercer Lake. It will mark the first time on the water for the Syracuse women's rowing program since May 18, 2019 when the Orange finished third at the 2019 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship. The Second Varsity 4 will race first with a 10 am start.
Head coach Luke McGee is in his third year as Syracuse's head coach. The former U.S. Olympic national team coach, McGee boasts extensive collegiate and international coaching experience and success. Prior to becoming Syracuse's head coach in June of 2018, McGee served as a men's head coach for the USA national team from 2012-17, where he managed all aspects of the USA Men's 8+ Olympic training. During his tenure, the United States Men's 8+ won four World Cup medals, one World Championship medal and finished fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympics. In addition, he served as the USA Under-23 Team Coordinator from 2011-17. He guided that squad to the gold medal at the 2012 Under-23 World Championship.

Mercer Lake is a manmade lake located within Mercer County Park and. One of the USA National Team training sites is located on Mercer Lake out of the Caspersen Boathouse and has been the host of numerous championships regattas. The seven-lane buoyed course has served as the U.S. Olympic team trials location for a number of years, most recently in 2016 in preparation for the Rio Olympics. The NCAA Championships for women's rowing and IRA National Championship for men's rowing have both been held on Mercer Lake and the 2021 IRA National Championship regatta scheduled there later this year.
