
Softball Loses to Virginia, Wrap Up Series Sunday at Noon

Virginia blanked Syracuse, 6-0, on Saturday afternoon in the third game of the four-game Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) series. The Orange (17-16, 10-13 ACC) will conclude the series against the Cavaliers on Sunday, April 25. First pitch is set for Noon on ACCNX through the ESPN app. 
The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Arizona Ritchie stole home. Virginia's Mikayla Houge retired the next six batters in Syracuse's lineup in order to take a1-0 lead into the fourth.Â
Angel Jasso led off with an infield single in the top of the fourth and Olivia Pess, who pinch ran for Jasso, advanced to second to put a runner in scoring position for Syracuse. Pess reached third when Gabby Teran grounded out to shortstop but Houge escaped the inning unscathed when she got Lailoni Mayfield to fly out to end the inning.Â
Lindsey Hendrix came in to pitch at the start of the fifth. Virginia added three runs on three hits to extend its lead to 4-0. Paris Woods led off the sixth win a bunt single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jasso singled down the right field line and Woods attempted to score from second but was thrown out at home to keep the Orange off the scoreboard.Â
Jolie Gustave came in to pitch the bottom of the sixth for Syracuse but the Cavaliers scored two runs on three hits to lead 6-0 heading into the final frame. Houge retired the Orange in order in the top of the seventh to secure the shutout victory.Â
Kaia Oliver (7-7) was handed the loss after going four innings alllowing one earned run on three hits in four innings of work. Jasso was 2-for-3 at the plate while Neli Casares-Maher and Woods accounted for the other two of Syracuse's four hits.Â
The Orange and Cavaliers will complete the series at Noon on ACCNX on Sunday.Â
