Syracuse extended its win streak to nine games with a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) wins over Boston College on Friday afternoon. It marks the longest win streak for the Orange since the 2012 season. Angel Jasso drove in the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning in game one of the double header for a 2-1 win and the Orange tallied six hits in a 7-1 win in game two.
Alexa Romero dominated the Eagles lineup in game one, striking out five through the first two innings of work. Boston College took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Ellie Mataya tripled down the right field line to drive in Nicole Giery who started the two-out rally with a double down the left field line.
Syracuse tied the game in the top of the seventh when Paris Woods reached on a fielding error by the Eagles and advanced to third on the misplay. Rebecca Clyde then reached on a fielder's choice while Woods scored on a diving play at home. Romero worked her way out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh that left two Eagles on base and sent the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth Neli Casares-Maher led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on fly out by Toni Martin. Jasso's single to right field scored Casares-Maher to give the Orange a 2-1 advantage. Romero returned for the bottom of the eighth and set the Eagles down in order including back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
It was Romero's fourth-straight complete game start and third-straight game with 12+ strikeouts. Casares-Maher had her sixth multi-hit game of the season going 2-for-3 at the plate.
In game two, the Orange got on the board early putting up three runs in the second inning off a double by Woods with bases loaded. Syracuse added a run in each of the next three innings to lead 6-0 after five innings.
Kaia Oliver retired the first nine batters she saw before a leadoff single up the middle in the fourth gave the Eagles their first baserunner of the game. She escaped the fourth unscathed and stranded a runner on base in the fifth inning. In the bottom of the sixth Boston College scored an unearned run when Kamryn Warman scored on an RBI single by Emme Martinez. Warman ledoff the inning and reached on an error by Gabby Teran. The Orange added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Casares-Maher scored on a passed ball.
Oliver struck out the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the seventh and secured the second out with a fly out to center field. Maddy Carpe singled to right field but was thrown out at second base by Jasso when she tried to stretch to second base, ending the game 7-1.
Oliver struck out four batters in the win and Casares-Maher was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Woods was 1-for-2 with a walk, four RBI and one stolen base.
The two teams wrap up the four-game ACC series with a double header on Saturday, April 10 beginning at 1 p.m.
