The No. 4 ranked Syracuse varsity eight crew earned a a trio of wins over No. 3 Northeastern, No. 6 Boston University and No. 10 Wisconsin on the Charles River in Boston, Mass., this weekend.Â
"I thought the weekend of racing was a great experience for all our athletes," Syracuse Head Coach Dave Reischman said. "We have trained a lot over the past 15 months, but have not had many chances to compete. To face three top-10 programs in just over 24 hours was a tough challenge and I thought our athletes showed they were up for it. To win 6-of-9 races and be within 2.1 seconds of going 8-for-9, was just a tremendous effort by the whole squad."
The Orange second varsity eight split its races losing to Northeastern in the morning and beating Boston University by over length of open water in the evening race on Saturday. In Sunday's race, Syracuse's 2V8 collected its second win of the weekend against Wisconsin. The varsity four was sandwiched between both of Northeastern's crews in the morning and finished behind the Boston 'A' and "B' crews in the final race of the day. On Sunday, the V4+ beat Wisconsin by open water to wrap up a strong weekend of rowing for the Orange.
"Our varsity eight put together three solid races," Reischman added. "You could see our 2nd and 3rd boats getting better and more confident with each trip down the course. All in all, a very successful weekend of racing."
On Saturday morning, the Orange earned a commanding six-second win over No. 3 Northeastern in the varsity eight. The 2V8 closed a multi-seat gap down the final 500 meters but the Howlin' Huskies held off to win by .3 seconds. Northeastern raced two varsity four and Syracuse's V4+ finished second in the three crew race.Â
During Saturday's evening races against Boston University, the Orange raced in a 12 mph headwind on the Charles River and beat the Terriers by open water in the V8. In the second varsity eight race Syracuse beat BU by 9.77 seconds and the V4+ finished in third to wrap up the first day of racing.Â
Syracuse's crews swept Wisconsin on Sunday morning to end the busy weekend of races on a high note.Â
