Orange Boats Take Third in Prelims; Repechage Races Begin at 4 pm
5/28/2021 1:19:00 PM | Women's Rowing
All three Syracuse boats will race in the Friday afternoon repechages at the 2021 NCAA Championships vying for a place in the A/B semifinals scheduled for Saturday, May 29. Each Orange boat finished third in their respective preliminary heat on Friday morning at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.

"The morning went according to plan as we knew we were going to be facing some tough competition in the prelims but the boats did what they needed to do to be ready for this afternoon," said head coach Luke McGee. "We are looking forward to the reps, which will be some really fast racing. Each rep will have about four boats that think they can make the A final, so we know that the reps and every race from here on out will be really hard but everybody seems in good spirits and ready to go."

The 14th-seeded varsity eight finished third, crossing the finish line in 6:34.952, behind third-seeded Stanford (6:18.170) and sixth-seeded Rutgers (6:22.098). The Orange will race in the second V8 repechage at 4:24 pm against Gonzaga, Princeton, Washington State, SMU and Northeastern.

The 11th-seeded second varsity eight also finished third, covering the course in 6:42.781. Ohio State, the sixth seed, won the prelim in 6:29.45 and Virginia, the third seed, was second in 6:36.713. Syracuse will race Alabama, Tennessee, SMU, Washington State, Northeastern and Rhode Island in the first 2V8 repechage at 4:36 pm.

Syracuse's 11th-seeded varsity four took third in the prelim, finishing in 7:14.435. Sixth-seed Ohio State won the prelim in 7:03.239 and third-seed Michigan was second (7:09.623). In the first V4 repechage, the Orange will race Wisconsin, Alabama, Duke, Tennessee and Navy at 5 pm.

"The experience here at the NCAAs is invaluable," McGee said. "We have the seniors and fifth-years who have been here before but other than that, with the lost year last year, no one else has been here before. It is a huge learning curve. The chance to be down here and see what it is all about and, certainly, anytime you can see the next level of speed it makes you hungry to get there."

The 2021 NCAA Championship features 22 teams and will continue with the semifinals on Saturday, May 29 and the finals on Sunday, May 30. Fans are invited to watch the 2021 NCAA Championship live on NCAA.com.

SCORING
The NCAA Rowing champion is determined by total points with points assigned based on the finish in each race. The first-place finisher in the First Varsity 8 will receive 66 points with each subsequent finisher collecting three fewer points – 63 for second, 60 for third, etc. The second varsity 8 winner will earn 44 points with each successive finisher collecting two fewer points (42 points for second, 40 points for third, etc.) and the varsity fours winner will receive 22 points, with the runner-up earning 21 points, third receiving 20 points, etc. Ties will be broken based on the teams' result in the varsity 8.
FORMAT
The top two times of each preliminary heat automatically advance to the A/B Semifinals on Saturday with the remaining boats moving on to the repechage on Friday afternoon. The two fastest boats in each of the two repechage races will fill the four remaining spots in Saturday's A/B Semifinals with the bottom 10 boats moving on to the C/D Semifinals.

The results of Saturday's A/B Semifinals will determine the field competing in the Grand and Petite Finals. The top three of each A/B Semifinal will advance to the Grand Final (places 1-6) and the other six boats will move to the Petite Final (places 7-12) on Sunday.

The 10 boats that comprise the C/D Semifinals on Saturday will vie for spots in the C and D Finals on Sunday. The top six boats will advance to compete in the C Final (places 13-18), while the remaining four boats will race in the D Final (places 19-22).
