5/28/2021 9:37:00 PM | Women's Rowing
Syracuse University will have three boats in the 2021 NCAA A/B semifinals on Saturday, May 29. The Orange varsity four won its repechage while the varsity eight and second varsity eight both finished second at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla. The top two times from each repechage advanced to the A/B semifinals.
Â
"The priority for us as a team was to finish match our team ranking in the coaches poll at nine which we are in a really good position to do," said head coach Luke McGee. "One of the big team goals was to finish above our seeding, which the varsity eight has already done and the other two boats are certainly on target to do. I thought everybody raced really well today."
Â
The 14th-seeded varsity eight took second in the repechage, finishing the race in 6:25.122, behind ninth-seeded Princeton (6:24.797), and ahead of 10th-seeded SMU (6:25.285). The Orange will race in the first heat of the A/B semifinals against Alabama, Rutgers, Michigan, Texas and Ohio State at 8:36 am.
Â
"The varsity eight race was amazing," McGee said. "They really stepped up and had a great race, great performance. The 2V continued to move along. They are having a great season and had another strong performance today. The four really capped off the day with a big win."
Â
The 11th-seeded second varsity eight finished second in its repechage, crossing the finish line in 6:36.930. Ninth-seeded SMU won the repechage in 6:34.367. Syracuse will race Virginia, Stanford, Texas, Brown and Rutgers in the second head of the A/B semifinals at 9:36 am.
Â
Syracuse's 11th-seeded varsity four won its repechage, beating the Duke boat that it lost to two weeks ago at the ACC Championship. The Orange recorded a time of 7:23.988, ahead of eighth-seeded Duke (7:26.348). The 'Cuse varsity four will compete against Michigan, Washington, Stanford, Brown and California in the first head of the A/B semifinals at 10:12 am.
Â
"This team has done a really phenomenal job this season adapting and rolling with the punches with respect to COVID and the late start in the fall and winter by continuing to train hard and staying focused on what they want to do," McGee said. "Today was just another piece of it. They have kept their focus and belief and here they are."
