The Syracuse softball team split its double header with No. 11 Clemson on Saturday afternoon. After losing the first game, 4-2, Geana Torres' drove in two runs with a base hit up the middle in the bottom of the seventh for a 7-6 walk-off win vs. the nationally-ranked Tigers.
Saturday's win marks the first win over a top-25 opponent since Feb 23, 2020 when the Orange beat #20 Texas Tech. Syracuse (20-22 overall, 12-19 ACC) will conclude the four-game Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) series against Clemson Sunday, May 9. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. on ACCNX through the ESPN app.
Syracuse was the first team on the board Saturday. A leadoff single by Gabby Teran in the bottom of the second got things started for 'Cuse. Lailoni Mayfield walked, advancing Teran to scoring position for senior Toni Martin. Martin drove in both baserunners with a double to center field for an early 2-0 lead.
Lindsey Hendrix (3-3) had a clean slate through the first two innings before giving up one run off two hits in the third. Hendrix gave up three runs off three hits in the fifth before the Orange went to the bullpen for Kaia Oliver. Oliver did not give up a run in two and a third innings of work, closing the game for 'Cuse.
Four orange players recorded hits in the 4-2 loss as Clemson improved to 2-0 on the weekend.
Game two was a back-and-forth battle between the two squads. Syracuse's seniors wouldn't go quietly on Senior Day. The Tigers were the first to touch home, scoring one run in the opening frame.
But SU responded in the second when senior Lailoni Mayfield doubled to right field to start things off. Martin homered to right field for a 2-1 Syracuse lead. Rebecca Clyde reached base on balls and moved to third when Calista Almer's base hit took a weird turn off a Clemson player's foot. Senior Paris Woods drove in both runners with a single up the middle making it a 4-1 ballgame in favor of Syracuse.
Oliver started the game in the circle for the Orange, throwing three complete innings. After giving up a game-tying three-run home run to Clemson's Valerie Cagle in the top of the third, Alexa Romero came in to relieve her.
Romero (8-9) entered and would close the game for 'Cuse striking out seven batters in four innings of work, allowing two runs and two walks.
Teran scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third to grab the 5-4 lead for SU, but
the Tigers tied it up again in the fifth inning when Cagle hit her second homer of the contest and 14th of the season. Teran had a chance to put Syracuse on top in the bottom of the fifth but was robbed at the fence by McKenzie Clark.
Clemson took the lead, 6-5, in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Cagle.
A leadoff single from Neli Casares-Maher, an error by the Tigers and a fielder's choice for Mayfield in which Casares-Maher avoided the tag at third loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh for Syracuse. Torres then singled up the middle with one out scoring a pair of 'Cuse runs for the walk-off win.
The last time Syracuse beat the #11 team in the country was when the Orange defeated Louisville on March 29, 2013.
After Saturday's double header the team recognized its seven seniors and grad students as well as four-year team manager Dax Speakman.
The final game of the series is scheduled for Sunday, May 9 at Noon on ACCNX.
