Syracuse's all-time leading scorer, Kayla Alexander '13, will make her Olympic debut in Tokyo later this month as a member of her native Canada's women's basketball team. Alexander first made the Canadian senior national team in 2018 ahead of the 2018 FIBA World Cup.Â
Canada qualified for Tokyo 2020 after going undefeated at one of four FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in Ostend, Belgium in February 2020. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be Canada's third consecutive Olympic appearance after the team previously competed at London 2012 and at Rio 2016. The highest Olympic placement by a Canadian women's basketball team was 4th at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.
There are just six Olympians on Canada's squad, the rest, including Alexander, will make their first Olympic appearance later this summer. Canada is currently ranked a program-high 4th in the FIBA World Rankings and recently competed in the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2021 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.Â
Alexander is currently training for the Tokyo Olympics with Team Canada in Tampa, Fla., at the Toronto Raptors' temporary training facility. In a few weeks the team will travel to Kariya City, Japan, the sister city of Mississauga, Ontario, for the final pre-Olympic training camp. Â
Team Canada opens its Olympic tournament against Serbia on July 26 and will face Korea on July 29 and Spain on August 1. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Day 12 of the Olympics (August 4) and with the semifinals set for two days later on August 6. The bronze and gold medal matches will be played on August 8 (Day 16). All games will be played at the Saitama Super Arena.Â

Alexander was the third player in program history to earn All-America honors when she was tabbed honorable mention by the Associated Press as a senior after leading the Orange to their third NCAA Tournament in school history. Her name is plastered in the Syracuse record books and stands alone at the top of the all-time scoring list as the only women's player to score over 2,000 points in their career (2,024).Â
