Knight Takes 7th in Olympic 5k
8/6/2021 8:24:00 AM | Track and Field
Syracuse alum Justyn Knight took seventh in the men's 5,000-meter run, completing his first Olympics.
Knight stayed in the top-10 for the duration of the race, which was a solid pace that ended just shy of a new Olympic record, and finished just behind the race leaders after a 55-second final lap. Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda won gold in 12:58.15. Knight crossed in 13:04.38.
His race concludes a strong Olympics for Orange cross country/track and field alums. In addition to his seventh-place finish, Katie Zaferes won a pair of medals in the triathlon (bronze) and triathlon mixed relay (silver).
A two-time NCAA Champion and the most decorated athlete in ACC history, boasting 16 conference titles (5 team, 11 individual), Knight was the 2017 USTFCCCA Cross Country Athlete of the Year. He finished in the top-three of his last-seven NCAA Championship races. He is an 11-time USTFCCCA All-American.
The Tokyo games were a great showing for Syracuse in general, beyond just track and field. Jenna Caira (Canada/softball) helped her team take bronze and Jerami Grant is guaranteed a medal with USA basketball, which will play in the gold medal game. The four Olympic medals is the most ever for Syracuse alums in a single games. Additionally, Hattie Taylor turned in a fourth-place finish for Great Britain in rowing, and Kayla Alexander played for Team Canada in women's basketball.
