Men's Rowing Schedule Announced

Coming off a successful fall season that was highlighted by a fifth-place finish at the Head of the Charles and a second-place finish at the Princeton Chase, the Syracuse men's rowing team is looking to build upon the fall with a challenging and competitive spring schedule. The Orange begin the spring slate with an informal scrimmage at home against Colgate the first weekend of April before setting out to the west coast for the first official races of the season April 9-10.Â
"The spring schedule is coming together for 2022 and we're all really excited to get back out there," said Assistant Coach & Recruiting Coordinator Jason Elefant. 'This season will feature the return of some of our historic cup races, The Goes Trophy and Packard Cup, while introducing some new races to our schedules, such as our west coast swing in early April."Â
Syracuse begins the season with a trip to Redwood City, Calif., to face some of the top competition out west. The Orange are joined at the California Duals by defending IRA Champion Washington, Stanford and Oregon State. Syracuse will race its Varsity Eight and 2V8 three times between April 9 and 10. Saturday, April 9 the Orange begin with a head-to-head race with Washington before facing Stanford in the afternoon. The third and final race of the weekend will be against Oregon State on Sunday, April 10 in the morning.Â
"We have been looking to add some out-of-region races to our schedule for some time now," added Elefant. "The event at Redwood Shores is going to be a great opportunity to square off against some Pac-12 crews that we don't normally see until IRAs. Plus, starting the season off against the defending national champion will be a great gut check for our crews. "
A week after the California trip, Syracuse takes four eight crews to Annapolis to face Navy and Cornell. Syracuse currently holds the Goes Trophy, which is the varsity cup race between the three teams, and the Stagg Trophy, the team trophy, after sweeping the 1-3 varsity eights at the 2019 edition of the race. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the trophies were not contested in 2020 or 2021.Â
"Many of these trophies haven't been contested in almost three years," Elefant said. "While Syracuse is the current holders of both the Goes Trophy, Stagg Trophy and Packard Cup, every team's roster has been almost turned over from the last time we raced in 2019. This means the cups will be up for grabs this year and there will be new storylines drawn. It should make for some fun racing."Â
On April 30, the Orange travel to Fairlee, Vt. to race Dartmouth for the Packard Cup (varsity race). Syracuse won the cup at home in 2019, the last time the two schools raced for it.
The postseason begins May 15 in Worcester, Mass. at the Eastern Sprints, which were canceled the last two years. The regatta will be held at Lake Quinsigamond, and will be Syracuse's chance to qualify for the IRA Regatta June 3-5. The national championship will be held again at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. Last year, Syracuse's varsity eight placed fourth overall, while the 2V8 was fifth and the V4+ placed seventh. It was the second-straight IRA the Orange had all three boats earn a top-10 finish.Â
"The end goal this season remains the same -- to perform up to our potential at the IRA National Championships in June," Elefant added. "To do that, we'll need to put together competitive results at the Eastern Sprints in May and throughout the regular season. The team will be working hard over the next several months to ensure strong performances in 2022."Â
