The two winningest division I basketball coaches in history face off against one another on Saturday Jan, 22. Head coach of Syracuse (9-9 overall, 3-4 ACC) Jim Boheim will go up against Mike Krzyzewski, head coach of Duke (14-3 overall, 4-2 ACC). Boeheim owns a career recorf of 991 wins and Krzyzewski holds the rank as the most winning division I basketball coach in history at 1,184 wins.
Tip off in Cameron Indoor Arena is at 12:00 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.
SETTING THE STAGE
The Orange look to build off their most recent 91-78 triumph against Clemson on Tuesday, Jan. 18. An offense led by Joe Girard III and Buddy Boeheim posted 51 points in the second half of the game to defeat the Tigers.Â
Duke's most recent contest resulted in an overtime 79-78 loss to Florida State. The Blue Devils had a 38-33 lead at the conclusion of the first half but the Seminoles are the ones who possessed the lead throughout the majority of the second period of play. Florida State won the game in overtime as a result of a pair of free throws sunk by Rayquan Evans.Â
THE SYRACUSE-DUKE SERIES
Saturday's contest will be the 18th meeting between the Orange and the Blue Devils with Duke leading the series 11-6. The Orange look to snap a four game win streak with a victory on Saturday.Â
ORANGE STARTERSÂ
Girard III was lights out from long in his most recent performance shooting 6-9 (.667) from the field and 4-5 (.800) from beyond the arc. Buddy and Jimmy Boeheim both scored in double digits for the 15th time this season. Buddy recorded a game high 25 points and Jimmy posted 13 points. Jesse Edwards produced his second double-double of the 2021-22 campaign with 15 points and 11 boards.Â
Buddy Boeheim has led the Orange in their six games so far this month. He is averaging 18.0 ppg and has scored in double figures in all but one game in January. Girard III leads the ACC in 3-point field goal average at 2.83 and 3-point field goal percentage with .455, ranking 21st nationally.
PANCHERO TO WATCH
Blue Devils Paolo Banchero was named ACC Freshman of the week last week after Duke's two victories against Wake Forest and NC State. Banchero averaged 22.5 points on .559 shooting from the field in the two games. He was also named to the Midseason Wooden Award Watchlist.Â
