Orange Winning Streak Snapped Against Nittany Lions

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse had its two-match winning streak to start the spring season snapped in a 5-2 setback to Penn State on Sunday, Jan. 23 at the Drumlins Tennis Club.

The Orange (2-1) lost the doubles point for the first time this season. The sophomore pairing of Viktoriya Kanapatskaya and Ines Fonte continued their stellar play as they dominated in a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Penn State (2-1) took the No. 1 match to even things up before Sofiya Chekhlystova and Gabrielle O'Gorman edged the freshman duo of Miyuka Kimoto and Shiori Ito to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.

Junior Polina Kozyreva recorded Syracuse's first point of the day with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, but Penn State clinched the match with three straight victories at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles. Freshman Shiori Ito came back after losing the first set to record a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles, while Fonte lost a three-set battle, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (0), 0-1 (10-3) in the No. 6 spot.

The Orange return to action next Sunday when they host Cornell at 11 a.m. at the Drumlins Tennis Club. At this time, fans are welcome but must wear a mask at all times and adhere to Syracuse University protocols, which can be found at Syracuse.edu/staysafe.
