Syracuse Earns Top Collegiate Finish at Head of the Charles Regatta
10/23/2022 4:23:00 PM | Men's Rowing
The men's rowing team had its best finish in program history at the Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday afternoon. The Orange won the College Championship in the Men's Championship Eights division finishing second overall behind the U.S. Men's National Team while the Champ 4+ finished fourth overall and third in the College Championship of the Championship Fours.
The Orange Champ 8+ crossed the finish of the winding Charles River in 13:33.3, 9.6 seconds behind Team USA's time of 13:23.6. Stroked by senior Nicholas Kohl and coxed by Bricen Nygaard, the Orange lineup consisted of the same eight oarsmen that placed fifth in the Grand Final at the 2022 IRA Championship last June. On Sunday, Syracuse beat Yale (3rd overall, 13"35.3), Harvard (4th overall, 13:37.6), Northeastern (6th overall, 13:42.8) and Washington (7th overall, 13:42.9) to make up the top five collegiate teams.
"The Charles was a great experience as always," Kohl said. "We kept the same eight from last season and showed a better speed than the other universities today. The Champ 4+ as well proved to be competitive down the course, demonstrating a good form even early in the season.
We are excited as a team for this accomplishment but we all look forward to try and do well with all our boats at the Princeton Chase," Kohl added. "There's a lot of work left to stay on top level."Â
The Champ 4+ finished third among college crews finishing in 15:52.7 behind Cornell (2nd overall, 15:42.0) and Princeton 'A' (3rd overall, 15:42.7). In fourth among college teams was Georgetown 'A' which finished in 15:53.40 and Princeton's 'B' crew rounded out the top five in 15:53.47 to place sixth overall. Peloton 'A' won the event in 15:17.3. The Champ 4+ consisted of coxswain Michael Harris, Sam Hobson (stroke), Connor Toomey, Murphy Waters and Finn Conlon.
"It was a phenomenal day for the team," senior captain Conlon said. "It was strong racing in the four and a historical performance from the varsity eight. From this point onward we're going foot to the gas for the rest of the year, and we will continue to raise the standard every day."
Racecourse conditions were cloudy with no precipitation and a tail wind.
Syracuse returns to action Nov. 6 for the Princeton Chase at Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.
