How it Happened
- Neither team scored in the opening 15 minutes, despite three shots from Syracuse, including one on net.
- Ten minutes into the second quarter, de Vries tallied her 11th goal of the season, finishing on a corner from Boogert and Comans. It stood as the sixth game-winner for de Vries this season.
- Three minutes later, it was Comans who scored, getting a feed after the initial stop from de Vries, putting the Orange on top 2-0 after 30 minutes.
- Syracuse's patented quick-strike offense was on display in the third quarter as van den Nieuwenhof connected two huge shots from the top of the scoring area in the 32nd and 33rd minute. Those were the 15th and 16th goals 'Cuse has scored this year inside the first five minutes of any quarter, including seven in the third quarter alone.
- De Vries assisted both goals from van den Nieuwenhof, resetting a career best with three helpers on the day.
- Syracuse dominated time of possession, outshooting the Cardinal 18-2, including 11-0 in shots on goal. The Orange scored on a quarter of their shots that found the net.
- 'Cuse was awarded 10 penalty corners, scoring four times on corners. The Orange hit 100 percent in the second quarter, while missing just one corner in the third frame.
- De Vries scored the 37th goal of her Orange career, pulling even in eighth place all-time with Martina Loncarica and Heather Susek, both of whom played for the Orange from 2008-11.
- The senior will need three goals to move into a three-way tie for sixth in program history with Lauren Brooks and Kristin Aronowicz.
- Borzymowski and Pert combined for the team's eighth shutout. The Orange have allowed just one goal in the last four games, which was a penalty stroke on Sunday against No. 18 James Madison.
- Syracuse improved to 10-1 all-time against Stanford.
- On successful penalty corners: We really emphasized this week scoring on those corner chances. We really stepped it up today, focused from the start: insert, trap, being able to finish. It really showed today.
- On scoring two similar goals: I think after the first one, we trusted to be able to score from that again.
- On team mentality and toughness: We're very tough on the field. We practice really hard. I think no matter what happens, you keep going.
- On Penalty Corner Success on Four Goals: I think that Charlotte (de Vries) had some really good reads on the corner and it created opportunities. Eefke (van den Nieuwenhof) found her rhythm and smashed a couple of balls; I can't wait to see it on film. They were rockets.
- On Turning Defense to Offense: I think it's reading the angle, and you know you got to go when you win the ball, we look to go forward and can we create an attack. If we don't feel we can, then we slow it down and keep it within your team.
- Takeaways from the Game: I'm proud of the kids; they had a good second half, they made some adjustments that we talked about and our ball speed is getting a little faster and we're getting more maturity in our play. Those are the things we can focus on as a team.
- The No. 11 Orange return to J.S. Coyne Stadium on Sunday for a special celebration as Julie Williamson Sullivan will be honored with her #9 jersey retirement ceremony at halftime.
- Syracuse takes on local rival Cornell with a 2 p.m. showdown on ACC Network Extra for the 38th meeting all-time between programs.
