SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Racking the fourth hat trick of the 2022 season for the Syracuse University field hockey program, Sabine van den Eijnden helped lead the Orange to a 5-0 win over local rival Cornell University Sunday afternoon.
At halftime of the game, the program saw the jersey of Julie Williamson Sullivan become a permanent fixture at J.S. Coyne Stadium as the former Orange All-American was honored as the first field hockey player in 'Cuse athletics history to have her jersey retired.
Syracuse (12-2) picked up its 33rd win all-time against the Big Red of Cornell, thanks to van den Eijnden's first career hat trick at Syracuse, including the final two goals of the game. Brooke Borzymowski and Louise Pert combined for the Division I-leading ninth Syracuse shutout this season. Willemijn Boogert and Quirine Comans added goals while Joy Haarman and Charlotte de Vries tallied assists.
Cornell (6-5) was limited to three shots, getting one each from starters Caroline Ramsey and Meadow Maguire. Antonia Packard put one chance on goal, which was thwarted by Borzymowski in the first quarter of the contest.
How it Happened
Reaction to Hat Trick: I'm really excited to score three goals in a match and obviously happy with a win.
Doubling season goal total: I think we played really well today and there were spaces to connect really well. … We've been working with connections a lot with strikers and defenders. We were moving, we were giving the ball to each other and that led to good things.
On Creating Offense: What really worked well today was lifting it, using speed to slow it and then accelerate, it worked really well today.
Quotables - Head Coach Ange Bradley Postgame
On Sabine van den Eijnden's Day: She really studies the game a good bit off the field, looks at a lot of video, and thinks about the game. She loves to shoot. I think now we're starting to get our connections a little bit better up front and I think she's finding the area and taking the opportunity to have a shot.
The Importance of a Fast Start: It's nice to have a fast start; if you can get something in the first five minutes, first 10 minutes, that's awesome. Then your opposition has to try and score too. It is something that we try and work on and think about going out there; going out there to strike quickly and strike often.
On Julie Williamson Sullivan Jersey Retirement: It gives me chills just thinking about it. I have my number nine on (team wore #9 Williamson shirts for warmups). I think it's really a great honor to have someone from the field hockey program honored this way. … We're recognizing our third female and that's just awesome to start recognizing women in sport here and that's a big credit to (Director of Athletics) John Wildhack. To have our sport represented is really great and a big honor for us.

How it Happened
- Per usual, Syracuse applied the pressure early as van den Eijnden scored in the sixth minute of the game as Haarman drove deep into the scoring area before passing back to van den Eijnden at the top of the scoring area.
- In the final 30 seconds of the opening period, Boogert extended her stick and tipped a de Vries shot up and over Cornell's Aerin Park for a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes.
- The fastest-striking team in the ACC, Comans scored her 12th of the season just two minutes into the second quarter. The graduate student plucked the ball right off an opponent's stick, earning a quasi-breakaway before finding the cage.
- Five minutes later, van den Eijnden scored her second of the day, driving the baseline on the far side and banking a shot off Park's pads for a five-hole goal and a 4-0 Syracuse lead at the halftime break.
- Again Syracuse got a goal in the first five minutes of a quarter as van den Eijnden completed the team's fourth hat trick this season, sending a laser-beam shot up and away to the far corner for a 5-0 'Cuse victory and a new career-best for van den Eijnden.
- Syracuse dominated time of possession, taking 13 shots against the Big Red's three. The Orange held Cornell without a shot attempt in the entire first quarter, and surrendered just one shot per quarter over the final three frames.
- Syracuse grabbed seven penalty corners, leading to the Boogert goal on the de Vries shot.
- Borzymowski and Pert combined for the team's ninth shutout of the season. Syracuse has successfully shut out its last five opponents at J.S. Coyne Stadium while allowing just three goals at home through seven home games.
- Van den Eijnden was incredibly efficient, scoring three times on four total shots. Seven 'Cuse players took shots in the game. Van den Eijnden joins Haarman, Comans and de Vries with hat tricks this season.
- Lexie Hausheer made two saves in relief for the Big Red, playing over the final 35 minutes of the contest.
- Syracuse improved to 33-3-1 all-time against Cornell, the most games against a nonconference opponent in program history.
