Syracuse played #12 Penn State nearly even in the opening period with neither team scoring in the first 19 minutes in a battle between the top two teams in College Hockey America. Then Penn State's Kaira Zannon scored with 59 seconds to play to give the Nittany Lions (12-8-1 overall, 4-1 CHA) a 1-0 advantage after one period on what proved to be the game-winning goal. Syracuse (7-10-1, 4-1) goaltender Arielle DeSmet recorded 35 saves on 39 shots in the contest. The teams will play again on Saturday, Dec. 4th at 1 pm (B1G+).Â
Â
"I was veery happy with our first period today. It was a great road period against a very strong team," said head coach Britni Smith. "I thought we played our game and executed our plan very well. We got away from that a bit in the second and third. Tomorrow is a new day, and we will be back ready to compete, be gritty and play Syracuse hockey for 60 minutes."
Â
In the second period, Penn State opened a 3-0 lead with 3:22 remaining in the second period on goals within 20 seconds of each other. Izzy Heminger and Alyssa Machado gave the Nittany Lions a three-goal buffer. In the third period, Tessa Janecke scored to make the final score 4-0.
Â
DeSmet ranks second on Syracuse's career saves record list with 1,863 in 74 games.
