MONROE, LA.- The Orange swept their second set of games at the Best on the Bayou Classic. Syracuse defeated Morehead State University in its first game on Saturday 12-4 and later defeated Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) by a score of 12-9.
In the first game, freshman Tessa Galipeau began the first inning with a solo homerun to right field to put the Orange on the board first. After the Eagles tied the score in the second inning off a drive up the middle, the Orange produced a strong second inning in response. Laila Alves began the rally with a bunt single to drive in a run and advance to second herself. Rebecca Clyde and Paris Woods both nailed doubles to score three more runs. Neli Casares-Maher launched a two run homerun down the left field line to end the second inning with Syracuse leading 7-1.Â
Morehead added two more runs in the fourth to narrow the score to a three run margin at 7-4. The Orange scored two unearned runs in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth to end the game at 12-4 after six innings of play.
In the game against Southern Illinois Edwardsville, the Orange held the Cougars scoreless while scoring one run of their own in the first inning. Two home runs from SIUE in the bottom of the second put them ahead 5-1. A string of rbi hits from Tessa Galipeau and Angel Jasso in the third gave the Orange two more on the board but again, the Cougars responded with two home runs, one in the third and one in the fourth inning, to maintain the lead at 9-3.Â
After another rbi from Jasso in the fifth inning to make the score 9-4, both teams were silent in the sixth inning. Syracuse's nine run rally in the seventh inning sealed their victory against SIUE. A three-run home run from Kelly Breen sparked the comeback. An rbi single from Paris Woods scored two runs to take the 10-9 lead. Neli Casares-Maher closed out the game with a two-run homer to make the final score 12-9.
