SYRACUSE, N.Y. --Â Syracuse defeated Niagara 5-0 at the Drumlins Tennis Club on Sunday afternoon to cap off a flawless weekend doubleheader against two Western New York teams. The Orange got off to a fast start in doubles play and never looked back, taking all seven matches of the day in straight sets. Two singles matches were scratched due to coaches' decisions.Â
Polina Kozyreva and Shiori Ito each won their seventh singles match of the spring, capping off a perfect non-conference run for the two. Kozyreva's 6-2, 6-3 victory over Niagara's Coral Rodriguez was her seventh in straight sets as the Russian junior has been close to perfect this spring. Orange junior Zeynep Erman made her spring season debut out of the No.3 doubles spot alongside Viktoriya Kanapatskaya, winning their match 6-1.Â
Freshman Miyuka Kimoto has won each of her last four singles matches, all of which have been played out of the No. 1 or 2 positions. She boasts a 12-2 overall record this spring between singles and doubles competition. The Orange's freshman duo of Kimoto and Ito combined for 22 match victories in non-conference competition.
Syracuse's 6-1 record after non-conference play marks the third time in the Younes Limam era that the Orange have begun the spring season at 6-1 or better. The Orange face Boston College in what will be both teams' ACC opener next Saturday, Feb. 13. The Golden Eagles are 3-2 on the young season, with wins over Boston University, Brown, and NJIT.Â
At this time, fans are welcome at the Drumlins Tennis Club for Orange home matches. Admission is free. Fans must wear a mask at all times and follow Syracuse University protocols, which can be found at Syracuse/edu/staysafe.
