Orange to Open 2022 Season at Doc Hosea Invitational
3/26/2022 5:28:00 PM | Women's Rowing
The 2022 Syracuse rowing season begins at the Doc Hosea Invitational on Sunday, March 27th. The 13th-ranked Orange will compete in all five races at the 18-team regatta on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. in their first event of the new season.
Â
Head coach Luke McGee, who is in his fourth year as Syracuse's head coach, guided the 2021 Orange to a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championship, which was the best team result in program history. Syracuse finished the season ranked 11th in the country. The former U.S. Olympic national team coach, McGee boasts extensive collegiate and international coaching experience and success.Â
Â
The Doc Hosea Invitational was borne out of the Orange Challenge Cup, which is one of the oldest trophies in women's rowing. Syracuse, Pennsylvania and Northeastern have competed in the Orange Challenge Cup since 1977, with the trophy going to the team that amasses the highest overall point total at the regatta.
Â
The regatta expanded to include other schools as it became the Doc Hosea Invitational. The 2022 field at the competitive early season-regatta includes: Bucknell, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Drexel, George Washington, Georgetown, Massachusetts, Michigan State, Navy, Northeastern, Notre Dame, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Rutgers, Temple and Tulsa.
Â
This is the fifth year of the Doc Hosea Invitational and the fourth in a row to take place on the Cooper (the event was on pause in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19). The event was created in memory of longtime U.S. National Rowing Team Doctor, Timothy "Doc" Hosea. Doc made himself available to anyone in rowing who asked for his help, from the National Team down to college, club and high school athletes.

50 YEARS OF SYRACUSE WOMEN'S ATHLETICS
Orange alumni, fans and friends are invited to share in a year-long celebration of 50 years of Syracuse University women's athletics. Events and special recognition of all female student-athletes who have donned the Block S to represent Syracuse University and the Athletics Department since 1971-72 will be held throughout the 2021-22 seasons. As we celebrate this history, we acknowledge those who have gone before us to set the standard we strive to achieve today so we can pave the way for the future. We reflect on the history of women in sport, admire their sacrifices, recognize their contributions and accomplishments, and honor their legacy.
