5 Set PRs at Stanford Invite
4/2/2022 10:03:00 AM | Track and Field
Five Syracuse competitors turned in personal-best times at the Stanford Invitational, and the sixth member of the Orange to compete at the event was three tenths of a second off, in a solid outdoor debut for all six.
The Stanford Invitational is one of the strongest fields in the nation annually for distance races, which provided a venue for a strong showing for 'Cuse.
Joe Dragon (28:34.09), JP Trojan (28:35.16) and Matthew Scrape (29:07.86) all turned in new career best times in the 10,000-meter run. Dragon and Trojan finished 14th and 16th in a loaded invite section of the event, while Scape took ninth in section 2-of-4.
The invite section featured professional runners as well, with Germany's Mohamed Mohumed winning the event in 28:13.83. The collegiate runners ahead of Dragon included the NCAA indoor 5k campion this season, the SEC 5k champion and the third and eighth place finishers from the NCAA Cross Country Championships this season, boding well for the remainder of the season with Dragon and Trojan right in the mix.
Annie Boos was fourth in the top section of the 3000-meter steeplechase. She finished in 10:10.60, which was a Syracuse best, but 0.3 seconds off her all-time best. Carmen Riano was the top finisher in 9:57.42.
Abigail Spiers finished sixth in her section of the 10k, crossing the line in 34:17.86. Colorado's India Johnson won the race in 33:50.67. Spiers' time was also a PR.
Nathan Henderson shaved four seconds off his 5k PR, finishing sixth in 13:44.65. George Kusche of Northern Arizona (13:39.51) was the winner.
The Orange are back in action next Friday at the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational.
