'Cuse hosts Cornell on Monday
Syracuse cut a five goal Albany lead to one on two occasions in the last 16 minutes of regulation, but the Great Danes withstood the rally in the fourth and 'Cuse never got back within one down the stretch, losing 14-12 at Casey Stadium.
Owen Seebold, Tucker Dordevic and Jacob Buttermore each notched hat tricks, to lead a depleted SU unit that was down four midfielders from players that contributed on its top two lines in the season opener. Brendan Curry (2-1) also added three points in the loss.
Jakob Phaup won 18-of-30 restarts and collected 11 ground balls, while Saam Olexo led the defensive unit with three caused turnovers.
After the teams split the opening period 4-4, the second quarter is what did the Orange in. The Great Danes scored four of the five tallies in the period, and three of the first four in the third quarter, stretching their lead to 11-6.
A four-goal run from the Orange, with Dordevic, Curry, Berkman and Buttermore contributing, pulled SU within one heading into the fourth.
Nick Karnes scored on the faceoff to start the fourth and after Dordevic scored to pull the Orange within one again, two-straight Great Danes goals ended the Orange's hopes.
'Cuse will have a tight turnaround, hosting Cornell on Monday at 7 p.m.
