The NCAA Championships are delayed this morning due to a weather delay.Â
New Schedule
V8: 9:12 am/Lane 3
2V8: 9:52 am/Lane 4
V4: 10:32 am/Lane 3
Preview
All three Syracuse University boats will race in the C/D semifinals at the NCAA Championships on Saturday, May 28 after each finished fourth in their respective heats and repechages on day one of the 2022 national regatta. The Orange varsity eight will race at 8:12 am in lane three against Boston University, Northeastern, Oregon State and Gonzaga, while the second varsity eight starts at 9:12 am in lane four against Northeastern, Duke, Boston University and Jacksonville. The varsity four will race at 9:48 am in lane three against Boston University, Rhode Island, Oregon State and Gonzaga. The championship concludes on Sunday with the finals at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.
Â
"Today is a disappointing result. It is one of those regattas that it's such high speed that if you have a couple of missteps you are going to pay for it and that's the way it went," said head coach Luke McGee. "The only way to come back from the disappointment is to come back and have two really good races. There is still a lot we can learn about ourselves and still perform as a program. Even though it is not where we want to be or where we had hoped to be, there is still a lot of good racing ahead of us. I told the crew today, they can be upset about it for tonight, but when they wake up tomorrow, they have to be ready to go because the regatta is halfway done. The die is cast a little bit that they are not going to get everything out of the regatta that they had hoped to so the only thing you can do now to make you feel somewhat better about it when it is done is to go win the last two."
Â
The varsity eight started the day with a fourth-place finish in its heat, crossing the finish line in 6:29.960. Stanford (6:11.674), Ohio State (6:16.675) and Oregon State (6:25.780) were first through third, respectively. In the repechage, the Orange were fourth (6:26.510), behind Michigan (6:15.564), SMU (6:16.894) and Rutgers (6:17.384).
Â
Syracuse's second varsity eight also took fourth in both its heat and repechage. In the morning race, the Orange completed the race in 6:34.011, trailing Stanford (6:14.782), Princeton (6:19.761) and Brown (6:27.844), and in the repechage, Syracuse had a time of 6:29.538, behind Penn (6:22.838), Michigan (6:24.424) and Rutgers (6:25.806).
Â
In its first race, the varsity four crossed the finish line fourth in 7:22.790. Texas was first (6:56.663), followed by Yale (7:04.101) and USC (7:07.381). The crew also placed fourth in the repechage with a time of 7:19.151. California (7:06.853) won the repechage with Rutgers (7:07.663) and SMU (7:12.137) finishing second and third, respectively.
The 13th-ranked Orange, one of three Atlantic Coast Conference squads in the 22-team field, entered the 2022 event with the varsity eight seeded 14th, the second varsity eight seeded 12th and the varsity four seeded 16th.
Syracuse has competed in nine NCAA Championships, including 2021 when the Orange recorded the best team finish in program history with a 10th place performance. The Orange have competed in four of the last five NCAA Championships (2016, 2017, 2018, 2021; no championship in 2020 due to COVID-19).
Â
The NCAA Championship semifinals will be streamed live on NCAA.com. The Division I race schedule begins Saturday morning at 8:12 am with the varsity eights, followed by the second varsity eights at 9 am and the varsity fours at 9:48 am.
Â
The finals are scheduled for Sunday, May 29th beginning at 8:12 am. The Awards Ceremony begins at 11 am.
Â
SCORING
The NCAA Rowing champion is determined by total points with points assigned based on the finish in each race. The first-place finisher in the First Varsity 8 will receive 66 points with each subsequent finisher collecting three fewer points – 63 for second, 60 for third, etc. The second varsity 8 winner will earn 44 points with each successive finisher collecting two fewer points (42 points for second, 40 points for third, etc.) and the varsity fours winner will receive 22 points, with the runner-up earning 21 points, third receiving 20 points, etc. Ties will be broken based on the teams' result in the varsity 8.
FORMAT
The top two times of each heat will automatically advance to the A/B Semifinals on Saturday with the remaining boats moving on to the repechage on Friday afternoon. The two fastest boats in each of the two repechage races will fill the four remaining spots in Saturday's A/B Semifinals with the bottom 10 boats moving on to the C/D Semifinals.
Â
The results of Saturday's A/B Semifinals will determine the field competing in the Grand and Petite Finals. The top three of each A/B Semifinal will advance to the Grand Final (places 1-6) and the other six boats will move to the Petite Final (places 7-12) on Sunday.
Â
The 10 boats that comprise the C/D Semifinals on Saturday will vie for spots in the C and D Finals on Sunday. The top six boats will advance to compete in the C Final (places 13-18), while the remaining four boats will race in the D Final (places 19-22). Â

50 YEARS OF SYRACUSE WOMEN'S ATHLETICS
Orange alumni, fans and friends are invited to share in a year-long celebration of 50 years of Syracuse University women's athletics. Events and special recognition of all female student-athletes who have donned the Block S to represent Syracuse University and the Athletics Department since 1971-72 will be held throughout the 2021-22 seasons. As we celebrate this history, we acknowledge those who have gone before us to set the standard we strive to achieve today so we can pave the way for the future. We reflect on the history of women in sport, admire their sacrifices, recognize their contributions and accomplishments, and honor their legacy.
