Orange Close Season at 2022 NCAA Championships
5/29/2022 2:58:00 PM | Women's Rowing
Syracuse placed 17th at the 2022 NCAA Championships at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla. The Orange varsity four placed second in the C Final and 14th overall, while the second varsity eight was fourth in the C Final and 16th overall and the varsity eight took fifth in its C Final and was 17th overall.
Â
"This result is a tough result, but I do think we have taken positive steps forward as a team, in how they train, how they interact with each other, the culture of the team and how they bonded together," said head coach Luke McGee. "Looking back over the entire year it gives a sense that we are headed in the right direction. There were definitely good results along the way – the one race we had at Doc Hosea before the weather cancellation, Lake Wheeler was a real positive, and ACCs, although we were kind of disappointed that we did not win, there were still some really good performances there. It is challenging in this moment with the results here at the NCAAs."
Â
The varsity four was second behind SMU and beat Duke, Oregon State, Pennsylvania and Gonzaga. The varsity eight was fifth finishing ahead of Gonzaga and behind Rutgers, Oregon State, USC and Duke. Syracuse's second varsity eight crossed the finish line fourth beating USC and Boston University. Rutgers, Oregon State and Duke finished first through third, respectively.
Â
"I have seen performances throughout the year from this group, whether it is individual work on land or boats in the water, that shows me that it is headed in the right direction. The mentality, the expectation and the belief that they could win the ACCs, while that led to some disappointment, it was a step forward for us," McGee said. "We have all but two rowers back from this NCAA group of 26 student-athletes and we have a big incoming class we are really excited about. We are really excited for the future. It is headed in the right direction."
The Orange graduate six student-athletes, including Emma Braun, Julia Comerford, Emma Gossman, Madeleine Gordon, Skyler Rivera and Eliza Yager. Braun and Gossman rowed in the second varsity eight at the NCAA Championships.
Â
The 13th-ranked Orange, one of three Atlantic Coast Conference squads in the 22-team field, entered the 2022 event with the varsity eight seeded 14th, the second varsity eight seeded 12th and the varsity four seeded 16th.
Syracuse has competed in nine NCAA Championships, including 2021 when the Orange recorded the best team finish in program history with a 10th place performance. The Orange have competed in five of the last six NCAA Championships (2016, 2017, 2018, 2021; no championship in 2020 due to COVID-19).

50 YEARS OF SYRACUSE WOMEN'S ATHLETICS
Orange alumni, fans and friends are invited to share in a year-long celebration of 50 years of Syracuse University women's athletics. Events and special recognition of all female student-athletes who have donned the Block S to represent Syracuse University and the Athletics Department since 1971-72 will be held throughout the 2021-22 seasons. As we celebrate this history, we acknowledge those who have gone before us to set the standard we strive to achieve today so we can pave the way for the future. We reflect on the history of women in sport, admire their sacrifices, recognize their contributions and accomplishments, and honor their legacy.
